PASURAMS 433 TO 442

5.1 AzhvAr immerses himself in naichyAnusandhAnam (feeling lowly about oneself).

433. Oh, SarvakArakanE!, GaruDadhwaja! (The one who has the GaruDa-flag), MAdhava!! Since my words do not possess purity, I am not qualified and do not have the ability to praise you. But still my tongue knows nothing other than your nAma. I am scared of the natural quality of this tongue as it is not under my control. Even if you get angry with me for being very aggressive, I cannot regulate my tongue. The learned will take only good things even from the cawing crows. Hence, please consider the goodness in my words too. (1)

434. Oh Lord who holds the Shanku and Chakkaram! There is none other than You who can protect your humble servant who has written cheap verses with his blemished tongue. There is nobody whom my mind would like to be associated with too. Is it not the duty of the munificent to bear the errors of the subservient? As an extra dot on the deer's skin would not be a heavy burden for the deer, in the same way,  the one who swallowed all the seven worlds and brought it out again should forgive and accept. (2)

435. Other than uttering NArAyanA! I hardly know what is good or bad. I hardly know to praise fraudulently, expecting something, Oh TirumAlE!! I hardly know any other means, other than chanting "NAMO NARAYANAYA", incessantly. I hardly have any strength other than living as a VaishNavite in your temple. (3)

436. Oh, the virtuous Lord who measured all the worlds as tiruvikrama?  Oh kaNNA who killed the cruel Kamsa and relieved your chained father from the clutches! Do not hesitate to accept me as your subservient. I do not desire material wealth from you. All that I desire is to be serving under your feet which will automatically give me all the wealth for generations. (4)

437. Oh Lord who took the world on your tusk and saved her in your VarAha avatAra! The one who broke the tusk of the KuvalayApeeDam elephant! Under your lotus feet, I have acquired in my heart all the wealth such as garden, spouse, cows, cowsheds, ponds, lands, wells, etc.  After surrendering myself to you, I don't desire to associate myself with these worldly people. So please relieve me of this worldly karmas. (5)

438. Oh Lord KANNA! the creator of BrahmA! The Blue hued divine Lord! Me, your servant has never felt hungry when I don't eat. The days when I don't chant "NAMO NARAYANAYA", incessantly and the days when I don't chant Rig, Yajur, SAma vEdas offering flowers at your lotus feet are my hunger days. The days that get obstructed by not doing pooja are my hunger days. The day I reach your divine feet will be the day I eat. (6)

439. My heart becomes weak at the very desire of longing to see the beauty of the sleeping posture in the yOga nidrA on the peerless AdisEshan at the sacred KsheerAbdhi (PArkaDal). But still with my mind's vision I become excited and my hair follicles rise and stand. Figuring out your physical presence, I extend my hand to embrace you and when I don't find you, I shed tears and suffer from sleepless nights. You have to bless me with the way to attain you. (7)

440. Oh MADHUSUDHANA who is the creator of the whole universe! You remove the hurdles of all your devotees thinking of You.  KannA! you removed the trouble for GajEndrAzhwAn! Oh Lord, You carried the most beautiful GOVARDHANA mountain as an umbrella to save the cattle and cowherd folks from the torrential downpour. You are the one who destroyed KuvalayApeeDam elephant! Oh Lord who is beyond all the praises! Please bless and grant me the power to think of You and praise You at all times uninterruptedly, every day. (8)

441. Oh Lord, who is the trusted protector and reason for every praise! The chief of all the nityasooris who took the NrisimhAvatAra! You measured all the seven worlds; You are the reason for pralaya kAla.  You then become the creator and protector. Oh Lord, You dispelled the sorrows of gajEndra with the chakra in Your hand. You churned the sacred ocean TiruppArkaDal. Oh Lord, the one sweeter than honey who has taken me into your bonds! You have to relieve me from all the miseries. (9)

442. Lord TirumAl appears to be a lion for people who don't think of Him. He who is the father of Manmathan becomes sweet to those who get attached to Him.  He is the bluish green hued VAmana with thick black lofty hair. PeriyAzhvAr of Shreevilipputtoor who has considered Madhusoodana as his sole protector and bowed down before Him, has written these 10 verses. Those who recite them in the form of NAma Sankeertanam will attain the Paramapadam as early as possible. (10)

PERIYAZHVAR TIRUMOZHI 5.2

PASURAMS 443 TO 452

5.2 Out of realisation, PeriyAzhwAr warns the troublesome disease to run away saying, “paNDanRu paTTinam kAppE” meaning "This is no more the old body (paNDanRu), it is the home of parabrahman (paTTinam) and is well protected (kAppE)".

443. Oh Disease! You have spread all over my body beyond my tolerance limit just like the numerous ants climbing up on the ghee pot.  This is no more the same old body. The Lord who saved the vEdas, Matsya NArAyAna (vedapirAnAr) has entered my body along with his AdishEsha and He is protecting the AtmA. The old order changes. Go away now! The home is now guarded by parabrahman. “paNDanRu paTTinam kAppE”. (1)

444. Oh Disease! You work for the messengers of death sent by the king of the southern quarters (yama) as directed by the markings in Chitragupta’s diary. Seeing the symbols of tirunAmam on my forehead and shankh chakra on my shoulders, yama's messengers have fled away into hiding. The Lord koorma nArAyaNa reclining on the pearly ocean, the master of the nityasooris, the ambrosia (nectar) of the devotees has now entered my body. So, don’t fear that Yama will punish you. Go away!! The old order changes. The home is now guarded by parabrahman. “paNDanRu paTTinam kAppE”. (2)

445. Oh Disease! The Lord has entered me and made me forget the womb (repeated births), control the five senses, remove the pride of my nerves and bones and remove the attachment to the organs in between the legs. Lord VarAha who lifted bhoomA dEvi, first gave me the knowledge of the rahasyas and then made me sing his names day and night and slowly trained me to do eternal kainkaryam to Him. The old order changes. The home is now guarded by parabrahman. “paNDanRu paTTinam kAppE”. (3)

446. Oh Disease! If my sins are absolved as a result of my sharanAgati, then you will become weak. You have seen for yourself that now there is a much stronger power than you inside me. Hence, don’t enter here, Don’t you dare!! (pugEnmin pugEnmin). It is not that easy to enter my home now because Lord SingapirAn (Narasimha) has made my body His temple. Run away and save your life. The old order changes. The home is now guarded by parabrahman. “paNDanRu paTTinam kAppE”. (4)

447. Oh Disease! You have to understand that you are dreadful. I am blessed to have been able to bring my Lord MAyavan, VAmanan from his abode to live inside my heart forever. It is now a lustrous gem-studded, everlasting temple (mAnikka panDAram). Please Go away!! Do not stay here anymore!! (pAnikka vEnDAm). The old order changes. I warn you again that you will not relish your stay here anymore. Run away. The old order changes. The home is now guarded by parabrahman. “paNDanRu paTTinam kAppE”. (6)

He has now kept His lotus feet on my head. (tiruman kAppu, the mark of a ShrivaishNava). Go away!! The old order changes. The home is now guarded by parabrahman. “paNDanRu paTTinam kAppE”. (8)

PERIYAZHVAR TIRUMOZHI 5.3

PASURAM 453 TO 462

5.3 In the previous decad, PeriyAzhvAr entrusted the custody of himself to PerumAL. Now that He is the custodian, AzhvAr declares that he will not part from Him, the Lord of tirumAlirumchOlai, at any cost.

And I have secured You firmly in my heart, after overcoming the obstacles and hurdles of the cycle of birth and death. I have realised You just as a wife realises her husband! I have entrapped You in my heart and will not let go of You. You cannot escape and hide doing mischief or magic. You can't deceive me either. They use their produce only after offering them to You and consume it as prasAdam. I have vowed to eternally serve You and be your sEshan. I have no need to wait at other's doorstep for any help when You are there for me. It would be a disgrace for You, if I waited at other's doorstep for any favour. (3)

You were instrumental for the kurukshEtra war that ensued which resulted in the death of so many. I have wandered and walked so long and couldn't find water to quench my thirst or any shade to rest. Now that I have reached the destination, that is You, my feet refuse to move; tears of joy pour down my cheeks without restraint; my body shudders and seems to have lost its strength; my voice fails to raise; my shoulders droop and I get goosebumps. 467. O my peerless, unparalleled father (en appA)! A goldsmith scratches the gold against a stone to verify its purity. Similarly, I placed your nAmA and YOU, on my tongue to transform it into pure shining gold thus gaining abundance gyAnam (mAtRindRi).  My tongue has attained divinity by constantly taking your name, Oh iRuDIkEsA ! ( Lord who has won over the senses), Oh protector of my soul!! (en uyiR kAvalanE).  I have now housed You in my heart and I have also become an integral part of You by placing myself at Your holy feet (ennayum unnil ittEn). (5)

My tongue kept reciting your unsurpassed deeds and nAmas that carried the mark of those exercises.  As a result, You made me Your eternal servant (unakku uRithAkkinAyE). (7)

Thinking about this magnificent blessing and Your overwhelming compassion on this lowly soul, my heart is filled with gratitude, eyes are filled with tears of joy.  I am now relieved of all kinds of worries (siramam tIrndu). AzhwAr tells us with conviction about the fruits reaped when one totally surrenders (does sharanAgati) at the lotus feet of the Lord . Those who sing these 10 pasurams will be protected by the Lord like a shadow (sAyay pOlE ) and will never ever be separated from Him. (11)
