श्री:
DIVYA PRABANDHAM WORKSHOP
SESSION 6 - TIRUPPALLIYEZHUCHCHI
AUGUST 2020
In TirupaLLiyezhuchchi, an enlightened TONDARADIPODI AZHVAR, in turn awakens the Lord from his deep sleep called yOganidrA (tiru paLLi, vizhi tuyil, aRi tuyil, kaLLa nittirai), so that all the approaching dEvas, RuShis, muktas and jeevAtmas are blessed by His divine sight and grace. It is for this reason that tonDaraDipoDi AzhvAr is called 'paLLi uNarttum pirAn பள்ளி உணர்த்தும் பிரான்'.
The beautiful and captivating dawn (uShat kAlam) is elucidated in these pAsurams. uShA, the goddess of light is the most exalted Goddess in the Rig vEda. She is extolled as the daughter of the sky drawn by hundred chariots, the auspicious and bounteous one who chases away darkness and sets all living beings in motion. (RIG VEDA - HYMN 1.48). TirupaLLiyezhuchchi pAsurams are recited in all VaishNava temples in this holy ushat kAlam.
AzhvAr eulogizes Rangan, assuming the role of panegyrists called 'vandee வந்தீ' and 'vaitAlikan வைதாலிகன்' . In kingly traditions, a 'vandee' is one who praises the king's valor and a 'vaitAlikan' is one who awakens the Lord.
Let us follow the footsteps of AzhvAr in awakening our Lord Rangan reposing on AdishEsha in the picturesque backdrop of the rising sun, the blossoming groves, and the morning whispers.

917. Dear Lord RanganAtha reposing in yOganidrA! The pitch darkness welcomes the beautiful dawn (brahma muhurtam time - kAlai am pozhudAy). The rising sun is seen embracing the peaks of the udayagiri (sigaram) in the east (kuNa disai). Beautiful flowers filled with honey have completely blossomed (mA malar) and are ready to be plucked for the worship of the lord. Oh RanganE! The kings who rule the earth and the dEvas who rule the heaven have arrived in huge numbers (tiRanDu) on their vehicles at your holy shrine. They shove and bump with each other, awaiting your first glance which is in the southern direction (edir tisai). They are accompanied by huge male and female elephants (iru kaLir) who are bleating loudly. Meanwhile trumpets and drums are being played to awaken you. All these sounds remind me (says AzhvAr) of the uproar of the waves on a full moon day (pourNami). ,
Dear Lord! Please wake up and drench us with your compassionate glance (karunA kaTAksham). ARANGATTAMA PALLI EZHUNDU ARULAYE! (1)

918. Oh! Lord of Shreerangam! The gentle morning breeze from the eastern direction carries the fragrance of the jasmine flowers (mullai) to your sanctum to make you feel fresh. The swan couple were sleeping on the soft bed of the lotus. Fluttering their wings to wipe off the morning dew, they too have got up to start their daily routine. araNganE! Long ago, a huge crocodile with big, sharp, white poisonous teeth had caught hold of one leg of the mighty elephant king Gajendran when he had come to pluck lotus for the worship of MahAvishNu. Finally, after a long struggle, unable to free himself, he surrendered(discarding ahankAram and mamakAram) by calling out (as AdimoolamE) to YOU alone. GajEndra varadA! You instantly came on your GaruDa vAhanam, sheared the head of the crocodile with your discus (sudarshaNa chakram-tigiri) and freed him from the distress (aRutuyar keDutta).
Dear Lord! Please wake up! One who understands the bhakta’s ananyagatitvam! Please wipe off our negative qualities and protect us similarly to how you protected Gajendran. ARANGATTAMA PALLI EZHUNDU ARULAYE! (2)

919. aRangattamAnE! The sunrays have spread all over(suzh disai yellAm). The darkness has completely gone. The radiance of the bright stars has diminished and the brightness of the moon(madi) has become pale. The early morning breeze , as it passes the thick groves, carries the pleasant odour of the areca nut trees (pAkku maRam-kamugin) filling the whole area with fragrance.
Oh! the one holding the chakrAyudham in your beautiful long hands! Please awaken and bless us with your sankalpa shakti. ARANGATTAMA PALLI EZHUNDU ARULAYE! (3)

920. azhvAr perceives periya perumAl as kaNNan and namperumAL as Sri rAman.
Oh! Master of the celestials (vAnavarErE)! The swarm of bees have started their day, leaving their hives in search of honey. It seems as if they are doing your nAma sankeertanam as they cross the paddy fields. The cowherd boys (Ayars) have untied the cows and the grown-up bulls to graze, with bells tied around their neck. As the cattle moves, the Ayars (includes kaNNan) play the flute to keep them together. The sweet musical sound of the flute (vENkuzhal Osaiyum) and the bells (viDai maNi kuRaLum) create a resonance of melody in all directions. RangA! You are the brave and parAkramashAli rAma who killed the asuras and helped sage VishwAmitra successfully complete the sacrificesm(mA muni vElviyai kAthu) in siddhAshram. The wielder of the beautiful bow or kOdanDam (vari silai)! One who smartly destroyed hordes of rakshasas in Lanka (aDu tiRal)!
My Emperor who was crowned the king of Ayodhya (ayOdhi em arasE)! Please arise and bless us all with your compassionate glance. ARANGATTAMA PALLI EZHUNDU ARULAYE! (4)

921. AzhvAr cites all the signs of daybreak to perumAl.
araNganE! The night has passed away giving way to the early hours of morning (brahmamuhurtam- the ideal time for being with the lord). The birds have woken up chirping and chattering among themselves. The sound of the waves coming from the eastern direction are heard clearly. The celestial beings (vAnavar) have come with beautiful fragrant garlands made of variety of flowers. The fragrance attracted bees which are still hovering over and around them. They are waiting to offer the garlands and worship your holy feet. You are the lord of this temple still worshipped by vibheeshana the king of Lanka (ilangayar kON).
My Swami who is none other than periya perumAl, chose to repose here in srirangam to uplift the devotees! Please wake up from your bed. EMPERUMAN PALLI EZHUNDU ARULAYE! (5)

922. Oh dear RanganAthA! Several celestial beings(dEvAs) have come in huge numbers with their families in big splendid chariots dragged by horses and their vehicles to have your darisanam. Filled with happiness they are dancing and singing (Adalum-pAdalum). As they wait, they shove each other to come ahead of the crowd to catch your first glimpse. AzhvAr lists out the dEvAs who have come. They are :-
1. The chief of the army of the dEvAs, Lord Subramanyan (arumugan) has come on his
Peacock vehicle (Mayilinan) with his army.
2. The twelve AdityAs (iraviyar).
3. The eleven EkAdasa rudrAs (iRayavar padinOru viDaiyarum- controllers of the material world).
4. The two aswini kumarAs.
5. The 49 marutgaNAs (marudarum- wind dEvatAs)
6. The ashtavasus. (vasukkaLum)
RANGANE! This huge crowd of the dEvAs (kumaraDandam) resembling a big mountain are waiting to see your tirumEni and worship you. Please arouse dear lord! ARANGATTAMA PALLI EZHUNDU ARULAYE! (6)

923. aRaNganE! Great sages like the saptarishis and sanakAdi munivargal (aruNtava munivarum) who have performed severe austerities are standing in your sanctum (garbha gruham). Indra has come on his elephant airAvatA. Many more celestials have gathered (andaraththu amarargaL). They are the sundarAs, vidhyAdharAs (vichchAdarar), yakshAs (iyakkarum), marutAs (marudam). They are pushing each other for want of space. This congregation is left with no moving space in the sky or the earth.
emperumAnE! They all stand mesmerized in the anticipation to worship you at this auspicious hour. Please wake up. ARANGATTAMA PALLI EZHUNDU ARULAYE! (7)

924. Oh my dear Lord! the bright radiance of the sun has increased spreading everywhere and thus darkness has completely disappeared. The great saints (nanmunivar) and divine musicians thumburu (tumburu) and nAradA (nAradar) are also present to sing your praise as you wake up. The dEvAs have brought several auspicious materials (padimaikkaLam) of the highest quality (Erpana vAyina) , filled with lovely fragrance for your tiruvArAdhanam. They are –
1. Bermuda grass or arugampul (vAyurai)
2. Radiantly shining mirror (kaNNAdi)
3. The divine cow kAmadhEnu { kapilai (goddess mahalakshmi resides on the back of the cow)}
4. Wealth of PADMA NIDHI (wealth of worldly pleasures) and SHANKHA NIDHI (eternal wealth of paramabhakti.
The lord of Srirangam! Please wake up and bless (kaNdaRku) them by accepting the auspicious materials brought for your tiruvArAdhanam. ARANGATTAMA PALLI EZHUNDU ARULAYE! (8)

925. aRanganE! Throughout the night the kinnarAs (kinnarar), gandharvAs (kantaruvaravar) and garudAs (geruDargaL) have been playing many blemishless musical instruments like the ekkam (small one-sided single string instrument), maththaLi (two-sided drum like mrudaNgam) and yazh (like flute or veena). With earnest devotion they wait for your blessings. Great rishis (mA tavar) , vAnavar (dEvAs), chAranAs, yakshAs (iyakkar) and siddhAs (siddhar) who are waiting in anticipation to see You, swoon due to bhakti and get up again.
My dear RangA! Arouse from your serpent couch, leave your state of yOganidrA and bless everyone with your merciful glance. ARANGATTAMA PALLI EZHUNDU ARULAYE! (9)

926. Oh dear emperumAnE! The sun has risen above the enormous waters of the sea. The fragrant lotus flowers have completely blossomed. After the morning bath in the cauvery, women pursuing sthree dharma, with thin slender waist ( compared to an uDukkai - a small hand held drum) have completely dried their curly hair locks (pizhundu udari) and have reached the banks to return home. AzhvAr reminds periya perumAl (who is kaNNan) about the similar schedule followed by the cowherd women in vrundAvanam. Oh! The lord who is reclining in Srirangam surrounded by the sacred waters of the cauvery! Please accept and bless this devotee named as TONDARADIPODI, exhibiting the shining shoulders carrying the flower basket filled with tulasi (tirutuzhAy) garlands and rejoicing doing service to your bhAgavatAs. Shower your mercy upon me and forever engage me in your service of tuLasi kainkaryam and attitude of servitude(bhAgavata sEshatvam).
The lord of Srirangam! Arise from your yOganidrA and bestow your blessings upon this servitor who deserves your grace (kaTAksham). ARANGATTAMA PALLI EZHUNDU ARULAYE! (10)
