SUMUKHAN AND GARUDA

 THE STORY OF SUMUKHA

   VISHNU ORDERS GARUDA TO HOLD SUMUKHA ON HIS SHOULDERS

MAtali, the charioteer and friend of Indra, was looking for a suitable groom for his beautiful and intelligent daughter, guNakEsi. He reaches the underworld NAgalOkam and is attracted by the nAgakumara, Sumukha.  He expresses his wish to make sumukha his son-in-law. Sumukha 's grandfather relates the story of how GaruDda was a sworn enemy and how sumukha was destined to be eaten by GaruDa the next month. MAtali takes him to Indra hoping to find a solution.  Indra grants long life to Sumukha.  Enraged at this development, GaruDa tries to harm Sumukha. Sumukha takes refuge under Lord nArAyaNA and remains at His bedstead. 

   The haughty garuDa approached nArAyaNA and pompously declared that he was all-powerful,  since it was he who carried perumAL on his shoulders and tried to harm sumukha. PerumAL touched GaruDa with his finger. Unable to bear the weight he collapsed. It was perumAL's sankalpam that held GaruDa and the seven lOkas aloft. PerumAL ordered GaruDa to hold Sumukhan on his shoulders and remain cordial with him forever. Thus he removed Sumukha 's fear and at the same time taught GaruDa his lesson.

அஞ்சி வந்து நின் அடிஇணை அடைந்தேன்*  அணி பொழில் திருவரங்கத்து அம்மானே.
